The “Pope Kids” reflect on the Papal Visit

What did you feel when you first learned that you were going to meet Pope Francis?

“At first I couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t sure if was really going to happen, but then we came to school over the summer and Ms. Walsh told me that it was true, and I was going to meet the pope!”- Pedro H.

“I was so happy. Pope Francis is the leader of the Catholic church and a really good person. All I could say was “wow” over and over again.”

“I felt really good and happy. My mom was very proud of me. She said that this was a blessing for our
family.” - Allison R.

What were some of the things that you did to get ready for the
visit?

“We came to school over the summer and we started learning more about St. Francis. Pope Francis really wants us to be like St. Francis so he took that name to remind us to have more peace.” - Itzamary V.

“We started to work on our projects that showed how we would recycle and reduce waste.” Pope Francis wants us to take care to take care of the environment because this is God’s earth. - Ngueubou K.

“Pope Francis really likes music, so we learned a song that we had to sing for him. We got to practice this song with the kids from the other schools, too. It was fun to meet the other kids. Now I have more friends!” - Aaron D.

What did you think when you met Pope Francis?

“I got to talk to him first! I was
nervous going up to him, but Ms. Walsh was right behind me so I stopped feeling scared. Once I started to talk to him I felt less nervous.”

“It was a good excited feeling. It’s like when you wait for a long time for something good to happen and then it does and you feel all good inside. I wish he could have stayed longer!”

“I kept thinking about how special Pope Francis is to all of us. My parents told me to enjoy the moment and not be nervous, so I wasn’t. He smiled the whole time and I made me want to smile!”

What has been for favorite thing about this experience?

“My favorite thing was seeing the Pope! I couldn’t sleep the night before, so when I finally saw him I felt so happy.”

“I really liked meeting him, but I also liked learning about him. I know so much more about Pope Francis. You could ask me anything and I would know it!”

“Besides meeting Pope Francis, my favorite part was doing all the
interviews. It was fun talking to people and being on TV. When I grow up I want to be a reporter!”

“My favorite part is that now people know me. I was walking on the street with my mom and a man came up to us and asked me if I was one of the kids who met the pope. He was so happy when I told him I was. His wife gave me a hug because she said I was blessed!” - Pedro H.
