Students Make a Racket at SPORTIME

December 16, 2013

Ask any child when their favorite time is, and they will answer “playtime!” The students of OLQA, however, will answer “SPORTIME!” This year, the 1st and 2nd graders are taking tennis classes through the McEnroe Tennis Academy at SPORTIME on Randall’s Island. Tennis legend John McEnroe launched the academy in 2010 with the goal of providing “opportunities to deserving NYC area kids — young players who would not otherwise have the resources to reach their full potential as players and/or scholar-athletes,” as he writes on the Academy website.

The program began last year with our 1st graders and generously has been extended to include our 2nd graders. Professional instructors, many of whom boast awards in national and international tournaments, teach students the basics of tennis on the facility’s indoor and outdoor courts.

Second grade teacher Ms. Muoio said, “The facilities are excellent and the instructors make the drills and lessons fun. The kids look forward to the tennis lessons every week!” For many students, this is their first time learning tennis. First grader Sharom, however, already feels like a pro. “Learning tennis is easy,” she said. “I can hit the ball with my racket.”
